Farm Mail
Hello again, Farm Friends! Spring has just about sprung on the Farm and we’ve got many exciting developments to share with you. This is your official Spring 2020 edition of Farm Mail!
Picture
First and foremost, we’d like to announce our newest Board member, Meghan Newell! Meghan is serving our mission as Treasurer. In addition to several years of rescue experience, Meghan compliments our team with her genuine love for animals and sincere compassion for others. In her spare time, Meghan enjoys running with her husband, Josh, and exploring California’s coastlines with her two rescue dogs, Dashaboo Jackerson (aka Dash) and new addition Leila. Welcome to Filomena Farms, Meghan!

As we continue to grow, we still want to add a couple more Board members to our team, specifically a Social Media Director and a Volunteer & Events Coordinator. If you’re interested in joining our mission to allocate grants and fund projects for animal rescues, email your resume and cover letter to
 contact@filomenafarms.org.

Beyond the Board, we are always in need of more volunteers! If you have a heart for animals and those doing their best to help them, fill out our volunteer application and we’ll be in touch to chat about becoming a Filomena Farmer.

FOSPICE ON THE FARM
Remember our special girl, Zadie, who came to the Farm back in October 2019? She is thriving! Farm Momma got Zadie one of those special halo things for blind dogs - it’s like headgear with a thin plastic circle that sticks out so she doesn’t bump her head on everything - and it helps her explore the house without injury. We LOVE watching her personality bloom!

Our newest fospice addition is Rolando, whose story is pretty somber. At roughly 5 years old, this handsome pittie boy found his way into the San Jose shelter with an enormous ruptured mass that landed him on the urgent rescue list. Enter our heroic friend Farah at
One Planet Rescue! Thanks to Farah and also the networking assistance of Brave Dogs Advocacy, Rolando is convalescing at Filomena Farms. SAGE Oncology determined the mass is indeed a malignant squamous cell carcinoma (cancer) that required extensive surgery to remove completely. The details are pretty gruesome, but if you’re interested please check out the full story on One Planet Rescue’s Facebook page. We are doing our best to keep Rolando calm and comfortable while he recovers. Although it isn’t certain yet that Rolando’s cancer is officially gone for good, we have great confidence in the surgeons at SAGE and are grateful to be able to give Rolando the best chance at living the life he deserves.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE
Your donations allow us to serve small- to medium-sized animal rescue organizations in our community. At the end of our fiscal year, we met 64% of our fundraising goal. This year, we will REACH our goal! We hope you'll consider making a donation to Filomena Farms.

CORONAVIRUS
It is so important now, more than ever, to stay in communication with you, our donors and supporters. We want you to stay healthy as we all continue to navigate through these unique events. We want you to know that Filomena Farms will stay true to our mission. We will continue to advocate for pets and support organizations that lower euthanasia rates in shelters.

While COVID-19 is contagious for humans and, as of now, is understood to spread primarily from person to person, the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) Global Veterinary Community—an association representing more than 200,000 veterinarians— states that there is no evidence that companion animals can be infected.
  • You can help your local animal shelter or pet rescue by offering to foster an animal in your home.
  • Continue to support us and any other nonprofits you may be affiliated with.
  • Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay home.

FILOMENA FARMS FOUNDATION GRANT AWARDS
Wonderful news: with your support we awarded three grants to local animal welfare groups! It is our distinct pleasure to name the following organizations as the recipients of our 2019 Foundation Grants:

11th Hours K9 Rescue, Rehab, and Rehome - recipient of Filomena’s Favorite in the amount of $300.00. This grant, in honor of our namesake canine ambassador, rewards 11th Hour K9 for their commitment to what we view as “complete package” rescue work, that is undertaking training and behavior modification in addition to driving a responsible adoptions program.

Renegade Animal Welfare & Rescue - recipient of Dulcinea’s Distinction in the amount of $250.00. Named after another resident Filomena Farms canine ambassadors, this grant recognizes RAWR’s “behind the scenes” rescue work, focused largely on public education, vaccine clinics, TNR programs, and animal transport.

Community Cat Allies - recipient of Petrocino’s Prize in the amount of $200.00. Named after the littlest resident canine ambassador at the Farm, this award recognizes Community Cat Allies’ commitment to championing feral cats’ autonomy while driving the importance of TNR and vaccinations.

We are so thrilled to help hard-working animal welfare groups like these. Congratulations to all three inspiring organizations! Please show them your support by visiting their websites and following their social media pages.

Mamada
IN MEMORIAM . . .
With a heavy heart, we mourn the loss of one of our dear fospice friends: Mamada. One Planet Rescue brought this sweet girl over from Iran and adopted her out to a wonderful couple in Saratoga. Mamada got to spend four whole years taking in the salty sweet woodsy air of the Santa Cruz mountains and enjoying life with her folks. This February, Mamada succumbed to heart disease. Although her heart failed her in the end, we take comfort knowing that it was so full of love and happiness. Farm Momma had the honor of dog sitting for Mamada several times over the years, including this past Thanksgiving. Mamada’s parents are exceptionally wonderful people and cherished supporters of Filomena Farms as well as One Planet Rescue. Our thoughts are with them and we wish healing upon their kind hearts.
