Let me tell you how Filomena of Filomena Farms came to be in the first place. Long before Momma’s dreams of a backyard dog park or an animal welfare non-profit, she had a simple four-legged dream: me, Filomena. I entered Momma’s life on February 4th, 2004, just a warmth radiating bundle of black and red fur. I’d say I stole Momma’s heart right away, but the truth is I’m pretty certain she’d given it to me before we’d even met. Momma knew she needed the right name for me - something strong, meaningful, nostalgic, and kind. Her mind lingered on a Guatemalan woman she knew: Filomena, a woman with a big warm heart who welcomed and instilled a sense of safety and belonging upon those she nurtured. It just so happens that Filomena means “loved one” - how perfect for me, Momma thought.
And so I became Filomena of Filomena Farms: an ambassador of animal welfare, the matriarch to animals of all kinds from kittens to chickens to puppies and others, the absolute pride of my momma’s soul. Momma and I were kindred spirits; we lived, loved, and laughed together for almost fourteen years. Cancer took me on December 29, 2017. I like to believe that together we spread peace, happiness, and wellbeing to those we met. Whether furry, feathered, human, or elsewise, I stood by my momma in her mission to demonstrate the meaning of compassion. For Momma, Filomena will undoubtedly always be synonymous with my memory, but Momma will work IN my memory to make sure others know the true spirit of Filomena through Filomena Farms.
