fall 2020 newsletter

10/1/2020

Well, here we are, Farm Friends - sliding into autumn and still in the midst of this pandemic. As always, COVID or no COVID, we hope our newsletter brings smiles to your faces. With the holidays fast approaching, we at Filomena Farms want to deliver our best wishes for health, safety, and encouragement to each of you. With that, we give you our Fall 2020 edition of Farm Mail. Thanks for reading!

CA WILDFIREs

Our hearts go out to every living creature affected by our horrendous 2020 fire season. We’d like to give a heartfelt thank you to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter and their heroic efforts to help displaced and endangered animals in the thick of it all. Their work and that of so many other individuals and organizations in CA has been heartbreakingly inspirational. Please remember that air quality carries dire health effects for our animals, even once the flames retreat. The AVMA reminds us to keep our critters indoors, keep the windows closed, avoid intense exercise, and make sure fresh water is available at all times. Please stay safe!

FARMSTAND

Honey from the Hood: WOW, we have barely been able to keep the honey on the shelves this year! Thank you so much to everyone who donated and requested a jar of our hand harvested local honey. After buzzing their little pollen covered behinds off all season, our bees are ready for some rest. So here’s the official “LAST CALL” for honey - while the remainder of limited supplies last!

Huevos from the Hood: Listen, Farm Friends, there’s no easy way to break this to you: we still have not seen a single lain egg from our girls. We’re at a bit of a loss here! Our girls live a stress-free life with the best nutrition and plentiful CA sunlight. It seems that Filomena Farms is home to the world’s laziest hens. We would love nothing more than to have farm fresh eggs to offer you! We won’t give up... The moment we find our very first egg, you will know. That’s a promise!

Special recognition: We’d like to thank the newly dubbed “Farmers in Training” of the Naglee Park neighborhood for their scooter-powered honey delivery efforts! These kids demonstrated exemplary work ethic by asking to help, passed their “honey jar handling” training course with flying colors, and ensured that the spoken-for jars of Honey from the Hood safely reached their destinations. How cool!

NAGLEE PARK PORCHFEST

Big thanks go out to our very own Secretary, Sandra Zampino, and her husband, Marc Zampino, one of our Founding Farmers. Naglee Park Porchfest featured flatbed trucks hauling live music bands delivering entertainment to residents listening from the socially distant safety of their front porches. The Zampinos sponsored a truck bedecked with Filomena Farms signage, raising awareness for our mission while contributing to a COVID-safe celebration. What a wonderful event!

FILOMENA FARMS FOUNDATION GRANTS

Picture
Excellent news: with your support, we awarded three grants to amazing local animal welfare groups! It is our distinct pleasure to name the following organizations as the recipients of our Summer 2020 Filomena Farms Foundation Grants:

Four Paws to Love - recipient of Filomena’s Favorite in the amount of $1,000. This grant, in honor of our namesake canine ambassador, rewards Four Paws to Love for their investment in the human relations aspect of animal rescue in order to ensure lifelong adoptive matches are made.

South County Tail Waggers - recipient of Dulcinea’s Distinction in the amount of $500. Named after another resident Filomena Farms canine ambassadors, this grant recognizes SCTW’s innovation and commitment to humane education shown via their Community Influence program and spay/neuter initiative.

Every Pet’s Dream - recipient of Petrociño’s Prize in the amount of $250. Named after the littlest resident canine ambassador at the Farm, this award recognizes EPD’s tireless heart, as seen so clearly through their Forever Care program for hospice animals.

We are SO excited and proud to help these hard-working animal welfare groups! Thank you all for helping us grow so we could increase our grant amounts this cycle. Congratulations to all three inspiring organizations and genuine thanks to each group behind the submissions we received.

CALL FOR ACTION

Picture
We need your help! Now that our community knows what we’re all about at Filomena Farms, we’d like to go ahead and announce that our fundraising goal for 2021 is $10,000. Farm Friends: we have shown you that we live, breathe, walk, and talk the “think BIG, help SMALL” mantra; the reason we exist is to bolster the efforts of our communities’ smaller animal rescue groups. Help us continue to offset their financial burden - help us maintain the ability to provide more grants next year - help us keep doing what we’re doing! That is our great ask. You’ve seen what we’ve accomplished this year. We are so proud of our grant program’s growth and we are so grateful for your shared desire to support animal welfare. Let’s do it again in 2021! If you’d like to donate to our grant program, please do so via our Network for Good page.

that's a wrap

Thanks again for tuning in, Farm Friends! We love sharing our exciting news with you each quarter, but make sure you’re following us on Facebook and Instagram so you can get the scoop as soon as we dish! Of course, you know we’ve got some things for you to look forward to, one of which is our upcoming Filomena Farms YouTube channel! Watch out for this to hit on social media soon. One more thing before we get back to tending the chickens and bees: stay tuned for a special holiday edition of Farm Mail announcing a super exciting surprise! We can hardly wait to share what we have in store for you, but you’ll have to settle for a teaser in the meantime...that’s all for now!
